Doodles you should see, t-shirts you should wear

Posted on 06 December 2008 by lainie

A friend of mine drew something that caught my eye recently, which I thought I would share:

Yoga for Muslims

(Yoga for Muslims – Illustration by Mohd Wahhab bin Tawfiq Salafi)

In our conversations, one remark has cropped up frequently. Some situations were meant to be turned into t-shirt slogans:

Lesbians for yoga; mass sun-salutations, anyone? Somewhat ironically, I never liked yoga anyway.

once again, fatwa concerns muslims, not non muslims. it is insulting to cartonise the way we pray like that. it’s not like we dont have a sense of humour, but it seemed non muslims are the ones who feels threatened. dont worry, we arent christian missionaries going around christening ppl. let us believe, let you not believe. end of story. and the two shall not interfere.

I am pretty sure Mohd had no intentions of insulting Islam with his comic, it was meant in jest. still, that is your personal view, i just thought i’d clarify the comic itself.

again, i reiterate, the fatwa is not a muslim issue, and does affect non-muslims. it affects malaysians, people i know and am not isolated from. it has gross implications on the rights of non-heterosexuals everywhere, and it is ill-informed on the issues of sexuality.

Also, I cannot endorse, in any way, a fatwa that promotes bigotry as i see it. I understand that you think this is an issue of disrespecting Islam – but it isn’t.

I can disagree with the fatwa council and still respect Islam. And I do – the Islam that is inclusive, and less driven by current, human prejudices against sexuality and gender.

why then, will i endorse the intolerant version of islam in this country that is being promoted by the fatwa council?

As a faithful muslim myself, i say bring on more these kind of comics. My point is that there is so much hypocrisy in d Muslim world. My people today dont wanna admit what our mistakes are but enjoy pointing four fingers at others (should at least point one finger at ourselves).

Muslims ask d non-Muslim to respect Islam, and rightfully so. Do we, muslims ourselves respect Islam by corrupting it with injustice and oppression toward one another.

    God Bless!!!
